  • Cozy blankets, fancy winter sweaters, crackling fire in the fireplace and a hot cup of coffee! As soothing it may seem, winters also bring a side which we all detest - dry eyes. A common problem in these months are the discomfort the eyes face due to dry air and cold winds. When going outside, wearing sunglasses alone won’t fix the irritation, itching sensation and excessive dryness winters bring along. Here’s how you can protect your eyes during these harsh months –

Keep Eyes Moisturized – During winters your eyes are constantly exposed to hot air, may it be from blowers or indoor heaters. Sit at some distance from the heat source. If you are not hydrated enough, this can lead to dry eyes which turn into pain and irritation in chronic cases. So, keep your eyes moisturized by drinking plenty of fluids during the day. You can also use eye drops as suggested by your doctor.

Keep Sunglasses with UV Protection Handy – Put those shades on - they are not just meant for Summers. Sunglasses with UV protection are a must in Winters. Choose the ones which block 100% UVA & UVB light. Go for wraparounds or oversized sunglasses which provide better coverage. If you have children around, make sure you buy sunglasses for kids as their eyes are more sensitive at young age.

Wear Goggles – If you are a sports enthusiast or are planning to be one, make sure you get a good pair goggles or sports sunglasses for your eyes. These keep the dust and minute ice particles from getting into the eyes and blocking your vision out in the harsh Sun. Pick only the ones which block UV light.

Hats & Sunscreen- This is a temporary solution in case you forget your sunglasses at home. Wear a hat to block the Sun or apply a sunscreen designed especially for the eye area to keep the UV rays at bay. Make sure you don’t spend too much time outside on bright days.
