  • Presbyopia is an age-related condition in which the eye lens naturally becomes harder and focusing on closer objects gets tough. Blurred close-up vision, eye strain and headache are the common symptoms of presbyopia. People usually require reading glasses in this state to see clearly however, those can make things at farther distances appear blurred. This makes bifocal eyeglasses and progressive eyeglasses perfect for the correction of presbyopia. Here are the three important things you should know about this condition –

    1. Presbyopia is not the same as farsightedness -

Farsightedness can occur at any age and can be corrected with single-vision prescription eyeglasses unlike presbyopia which occurs post 40 years of age and is treated with bi/multifocal eyeglasses. On one hand, hyperopia is caused because of small eyeball or ill-shaped cornea, presbyopia on the other, is the gradual loss of flexibility of the eye lens over time.

    2. People with Myopia or Hyperopia will also have Presbyopia –

As presbyopia is connected with old age, just like wrinkles or grey hair, ageing of the eyes is unavoidable. Individuals with myopia or nearsightedness will also have presbyopia over the age of 40 years. In both the conditions, one will have to go for bifocals or progressive lenses which have 2 or more defined vision fields as per your eye powers.

    3. One can have premature presbyopia-

There are several risk factors which lead to premature presbyopia or early presbyopia. One of them is hyperopia. Since your eyes have an underlying problem with focusing on near objects, it may pull the symptoms of presbyopia & strike earlier than expected. There are several medical conditions like diabetes, anemia and diseases related to the heart which can also trigger premature presbyopia. The best way is to get your eye check up done in case you start to have difficulty reading fine prints or need brighter settings to do everyday close-up tasks.
